Repeated Target Domains

Depending on what you want to say about a Target Domain, you're allowed to refer to different Source Domain. So there's a one-to-many relationship.

Lakoff and Johnson give a number of examples in chapter 10. Here's an abridged sample for the Ideas target domain. (I've left off many of the specific metaphorical sentences.)

**Ideas are People** (or animals, I'd say) > The theory of relativity *gave birth to* an enormous number of ideas. > Cognitive psychology is still in its *infancy*. > His ideas will *live on*.

**Ideas are Plants** > His ideas have come to **fruition**. > Chemistry is a mere *offshoot* of physics. > The *seeds* of his ideas were *planted* in his youth.

**Ideas are products**

> He *produces* new ideas at an astonishing rate. > That idea needs to be *refined* before you publish it.

**Ideas are Commodities** > No way he'll *buy* that. > That's a *worthless* idea. > What will win out in the *marketplace* of ideas?

**Ideas are Resources** > He *ran out* of ideas. > That's a *useless* idea.

**Ideas are Money** > Let me put in my *two cents' worth*. > That book has a *wealth* of ideas.

**Ideas are Cutting Instruments** > That *cuts right to the heart of the matter*. > He has a *razor* wit. > She *cut* his argument to *ribbons*.

**Ideas are Fashions** > That idea *went out of style*. > That idea is *old hat*. > Agile is just a *fad*.

**Understanding is Seeing; Ideas are Light Sources; Discourse is a Light Medium** > I *see* what you're saying. > It *looks* different from my point of view. > That was a *brilliant* remark. > The discussion was *opaque*.
